Treasure Island Newsletter

February 2010

Proud to be locally owned and operated.

From the desk of Graeme Back – Treasure Island Resort General Manager

Bula to all of our friends around the world, on behalf of all of our hosts here we would like to wish you a very prosperous New Year.

What a year 2009 has been - from the severe flooding in January 2009 to Cyclone Mick in late December: we have had it all. It must be said the times in between have been pretty positive we did see a better than expected demand for the Treasure Island holiday experience, we welcomed many returnees back throughout the year; and in some cases more than once.

We have also seen some pretty strong indications that Fiji as a holiday destination is becoming extremely competitive particularly with the 20% currency devaluation in April 2009. The airline competition is hotting up: on top of our existing carriers V Australia is now flying to Nadi and from March of this year Jetstar as well; we do hope the air fares will make our holiday offers even more competitive especially compared to other destinations in the Pacific.

Kids Club Corner:

Greetings to all from Sala and Bola! Anyone who has heard the beating of the lali drum and heard the call “Kids Club!!!” will have seen our kids rushing off eager to make friends and try new activities. While we have been enjoying our newly built air conditioned games room, we like to use it as a base to prepare for our activities out and about the resort. Recently with the blue skies and fresh breezes we have been making kites with newspaper and coconut leaf spines: Kids running up and down the white sandy beach proud of the kites that they have made, calling out “look at my kite it’s flying”! One of the kites flew away from a kid who wasn’t holding onto the string hard enough, the wind took the kite towards the Yasawa group of islands; as we watched it as it became a tiny speck above the sea… we know how to make a good kite!! We also make other crafts including the t-shirt painting, learn traditional fiji cooking and of course the meke dance, join in and help with the fashion parade; and for special occasions put on special performances: the Christmas performances were extra special and very much enjoyed by all…. Sota tale!

Environmental update:

Our Turtle Release Program has been one spectacular event after another with a total of fourteen 20 month old turtles being released over a 3 month period. On New Years Eve our house guests released 8 of our mature turtles to the wild, a very emotional moment and a great way to finish off 2009.

Our Flora Identification Program to help assist with the Herbal Medicine Program has seen the identification of several native trees, ornamental plants, and palms on the island as well as exotic introduced species; all of which also help to provide shade and habitat to our many bird species. We now have better knowledge of their many medicinal properties.

Reef Cleanup is another new program which involves both guests and employees helping to remove certain marine debris from the reef to not only make it safer for avid snorkeler’s but better for recruiting coral colonies as well.

Vinaka Vakalevu and Regards.

Room refresh program:

November saw the team proceed with a prototype “Bure refresh” sample to see how we hope to progress in 2010. This has been viewed by many of our guests during the last 3 weeks and overall the feedback has been very positive: we aim now to proceed with work towards updating as many Bures as possible throughout the next year.

Capital raising program:

Our returnees who have visited Treasure Island in the last 18 months have seen that we have been working towards a plan to raise capital through the limited release sales of newly constructed Deluxe Island Bures. We have completed our prototypes, Bures 5/6, which are up for sale now at a discounted rate; with the new builds looking to commence once we have completed sale and purchase agreements for them. Please visit our website www.fijibures4sale.com (live soon) or contact the group general manager for details, or to be included on our Bure Sales information mailing list.

Photography course

Treasure Island is delighted to be able to host a weekend photography workshop from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st March, 2010 with Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford of QCCP in Queenstown, NZ. Jackie and Mike are arguably the top professional photographers of NZ and Australia and also train and judge the professionals. They are holding this workshop at the very reasonable price of NZD$560 to make it accessible to Fijian photographers, but the good news is any keen photographer who wants to improve their technical and creative knowledge is welcome to enquire. We have seen some beautiful dSLR’s carried by our visiting guests in the last year, so we know more than a few of you will be keen to come over and do this course! There are also special room rates for attendees.
For more about the course and Mike and Jackie go to http://www.qccp.co.nz or email Jackie at creativephotography@xtra.co.nz or meg.back@treasure.com.fj for more course information, to book with your own returnee room rate photography workshop package email Graeme: gm@treasure.com.fj    (Be in quick - Filling very Fast)
